I was almost about to leave this company when I first became a leader. I had never come across such a poisonous culture. Any meeting ended in a shouting match - really! No one wanted to help for fear they would have to work on something they hated. And if you made a mistake...well, it was not pleasant.
And then I was asked to help fix it. How was I going to do this? I was new to leadership and given something that seemed impossible.

But I used what I had been taught. I built alliances, I created multiple high-impact teams, I listened, and I ruthlessly prioritised what I would do and what I would not do.

But that was not the only thing I did. I became honest about myself. What I thought was right from my viewpoint, and I felt confident to say that in the room with people who thought differently from me.

I shared honestly about the depression I was recovering from - helping others to discuss their mental health.
